Scanad Closes in on Coca-Cola, Guinness Advertising Businesses

Bharat Thakrar
Despite the ‘unrest’ in the industry as occasioned by the entrance of Scanad group and its “bullish” Chairman, Thakrar Bharat, the Nigerian arm of the advertising group of companies is closing-in on juicy businesses to the dismay of local practitioners.

According to investigations, the agency with Rufai Ladipo, former president of the association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN) as its CEO is far gone into being awarded the high profile Coca-Cola Advertising business in Nigeria.

The business which until recently was being handled by The Prima Garnet Ogilvy group as it was then known, was revealed to have made a return  to McCann Erickson Affiliate agency in Nigeria. However, the Coca-Cola’s return to STB was hardly confirmed before the detour that could eventually land the business in the Scanad’s kitty.

In a similar development, the Guinness’ Harp advertising business is leaning towards the agency. According to investigation, Scanad group is working on the business in Kenya. It will be recalled that Seni Adetu, CEO, Guinness Nigeria Plc. was the former Managing Director of Guinness in Ghana where Scanad is the roster agency for the company.

An industry source comments on the development under the guise anonymity, “It’s a matter of consolidating the relationship that exists between the two companies outside Nigeria. That is why Scanad is being considered for the business in Nigeria especially if their earlier engagement has proved to be a robust affair”.

The Scanad group has set the industry on fire since it established its offices in the Nigerian market.  Bharat is said to have a direct dealing with the Chairmen of the WPP, Martin Sorrel with his Scanad Group being the “store house” for all the WPP agency brands in most of the African markets.

In view of this arrangement, Scanad controls about 75% of businesses in Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania among others.  Key practitioners in the Nigerian market fear similar situation might be replicated in Nigeria as the businessman revs to pull all major multinational advertising agency brands in the WPP group under one under the Scanad group in Nigeria. Likely to be affected are Y&R, JWT, Ogilvy, Gray McCann Erickson etc.

Meanwhile, the battle to wrestle the Ogilvy brand from Prima Garnet has led to legal tussle between Ogilvy Africa and Scanad group on one hand and Prima Garnet on the other.

According to another industry source, Lolu Akinwunmi, CEO, Prima Garnet and who incidentally is also the Chairman, Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) was a lone voice is fighting against this ‘rape’.  “Now the bitter pill going round and only God knows when it will stop.  It was Airtel, now it’s Coca-Cola and Guinness.  A number of leading agencies in the country will definitely taste the bitter pill, he concluded.
