Etisalat Urges Nigerian Players to Excel at the 2013 Governor’s Cup Tennis Championship
As preparations for the 2013 edition of Governor’s Cup Tennis Championship gains momentum, Nigerian players billed to
participate at the tournament have been challenged to strive for excellence and
do the nation proud. This was the message by sponsors Etisalat Nigeria,
as they prepare for this year’s competition billed to kick off on the 13th of October, 2013 at the Lagos Lawn
Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.
Speaking in Lagos, Head of Sponsorship and Events at Etisalat
Nigeria, Modupe Thani said, “In 2012, the players were great to watch and it
was a delight to see Nigerian players play brilliantly against contestants from
other countries. This year’s competition will kick off in October and we are
optimistic that Nigerian representatives will improve on their performance from
last year in order to emerge champions”.
“At Etisalat Nigeria,
we believe in the power of sports and for the fifth year running, we are proud
to demonstrate our support for the game of tennis in the country. We would not relent in
supporting sports competitions that Nigerians are passionate about”, Thani concluded.
Last year, Spain’s Enrique Lopez-Perez won the men’s final,
defeating Ruan Roelofse of South Africa, while Romania’s Cristina Dinu beat
Conny Perrin of Switzerland in the women’s singles final. Both winners took
home a cash prize of $80,000 each.
Already in its 13th year, the Governor’s Cup Lawn Tennis
Championship is an initiative of the Lagos State Government organised annually
by the Nigerian Tennis Foundation and fully supported by the Lagos State
Governor. Its primary objective is to discover, nurture and promote talented
players to international standards. It aims to do this by organising world
class tennis tournaments involving international tennis players from around the
globe pitting them against their Nigerian counterparts.
